What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Gavin: This is a time where we can celebrate our roots and our family. My elders came from Mexico, and it was not easy for them, but they worked hard to ensure future generations could flourish here. I am lucky enough to have what I have because of them. This is a time for us all to remember where our roots come from and how we got where we are today through the hard work and sacrifice of our elders.

How has your culture and heritage shaped you?

Gavin: My culture has shaped me in many ways. From the foods we eat at home to the music I grew up listening to, everything about my heritage reflects strong family values, love for traditions, and a deep connection to community. It has taught me the importance of hard work, resilience, and the joy of celebrating life with loved ones.

How do you share your culture with others?

Gavin: I am lucky to have a diverse group of friends and I love having them over or inviting them to family parties. It’s here they can see and feel the deep bond the family has around food. Inviting them to traditional family parties such as the quinceañeras of my cousins allows them to see the importance of such events.

Who are your favorite Hispanic icons, leaders, influencers, music artists, etc., and why?

Gavin: There are so many to choose from. Great musicians like Vicente Fernandez and Ana Gabriel made beautiful music. Cesar Chavez fought for Mexicans' rights, not only for fair wages but also for respect for our community. Great boxers like Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, and Canelo Alvarez. We can’t forget about my favorite sport, soccer, where Carlos Vela was able to score at will and one of the best goalies in Mexican history, Memo Ochoa.

Why is it important to highlight the Hispanic community during September and October?

Gavin: It is great to share our traditions with others. The Hispanic community is a fun-loving community that welcomes all. We love to share our music, food, and always enjoy having any reason to celebrate.

Is there something specific you want to pass on to future generations?

Gavin: I want our generation to understand that the traditions we enjoyed growing up live or die with us. It's up to us to keep them going. I love seeing the happiness in my elders when they see the younger generation of the family come together. You feel as if that moment is one of their greatest accomplishments. I want to feel that one day and see all my kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews together enjoying the same gatherings and traditions I did as a child.
