If you were around in the 1980s, you’ve likely sported a fanny pack or two in your day. They’re one of the most recognized fashion symbols of that decade, which is why we’re celebrating International Fanny Pack Day on March 12, 2022. No matter which term you prefer — fanny pack, hip bag, waistpack or hip pack — Hibbett | City Gear has the bag you want from the designers you love, including Nike and Jordan.
But where did this fashion icon originate? Let’s take a closer look at fanny pack trend history, shall we?
The History of the Fanny Pack
Many consider Australian woman Melba Stone to be the mother of the modern-day fanny pack, or “bumbag” as she called it. Stone designed the accessory in 1962, and some believe she got the idea from a kangaroo pouch. However, other evidence and documentation suggest the fanny pack originated long before her time.
Variations of a “belt bag” appeared as early as pre-historic times. In fact, when early-’90s discoverers unearthed Ӧtzi the Iceman, they found him sporting a waist bag full of tools. Bags resembling fanny packs have popped up throughout history, from ancient Egyptian to the Victorian and Edwardian eras. In Medieval times, since many garments didn’t have pockets, people wore a bag fixed to a cord around their waist. Even tough Scottish men wore a type of fanny pack — a sporran that accompanied a kilt — which could represent a level of status and wealth.
From the 1950s to the 1970s, European skiers donned fanny packs to help carry necessities down the slopes. Some skiers also referred to it as a “bauchtasche” or “stomach bag.” And in the 1980s, the fanny pack emerged as a helpful companion to tourists, holding money, car keys and other essentials.
The Fanny Pack Resurgence
Even though this ’80s fashion staple stepped its way into the ’90s, it soon lost traction. Fanny pack popularity took a nosedive, and it quickly became cringeworthy. Anyone sporting the hip bag not only appeared unfashionable but even fashionably challenged.
Who would have thought these bags would make a comeback? But make one, they did. During the 2017 fashion week, Gucci rolled out new creations featuring none other than, you guessed it, the fanny pack. The bag showed up on the hips of Fashion Week models and spectators alike. In fact, many fashion influencers called the revived accessory the “It” bag of the year.
