Why the AJ4 “Black Cat” Still Owns the Court
The all-black "Black Cat" is one of Jordan Brand's most popular themes. This year alone, we've already seen Air Jordan 3 and Air Jordan 4 Net Black Cat releases, but the day is finally (almost) here for the arrival of one of the iconic all-black Air Jordans: the Air Jordan 4 "Black Cat."
There have been many Black Cat iterations over the years, including an Air Jordan 13, AJ 30 and a 2019 Olivia Kim collab that brought horsehair detailing to a women's Air Jordan 4 Black Cat. But the AJ 4 Black Cat is the clear favorite, making this retro release one of the most highly anticipated Jordan Brand drops of 2025.
The theme is black on black on black, a three-peat tribute to the original Black Cat, Michael Jordan. Though you might think MJ earned the nickname "Black Cat" because of his agility and stealth on the court, Nike lore suggests it was a moniker he'd first been given in childhood. After he shared that fact with Nike designer Tinker Hatfield when they were reviewing a concept inspired by Jordan's feline grace on the court, the Black Cat design concept took root in Hatfield's brain, according to the legend, and one of Jordan Brand's most enduring themes was born.
If you're unfamiliar with the Black Cat concept, this is the classic Air Jordan 4 rendered in all black. Nubuck upper panels in black. Hard plastic lacestays molded in black. Mesh panels in black. The graphite Jumpman logo on a black background on the tongue. The visible Air Max unit in the heel and an encapsulated unit in the forefoot. The Nike Air branding on the heel, replacing the glossy blackout Jumpman logo used for prior editions.
All black, all day.
Except, of course, a white Jumpman logo on the sole.
The original AJ 4 Black Cat dropped in 2006, and the last retro release was in 2020. Since then, resale prices for these coveted Nike shoes have comfortably topped $1,000.
But now you can scoop up your very own pair at retail prices from Hibbett online or in-store on November 28 — Black Friday.
Releasing just in time for the holiday season, whether it's a gift for you or the sneakerhead in your family, this timeless monochrome classic is among the most iconic sneakers ever produced, with proven collector value. Don't miss out.
