While the Tinker Hatfield-designed Air Jordan 9s were created with Michael Jordan in mind, it was a shoe His Airness never actually wore during a regular season game. (He was off trying his hand at baseball at the time.) Fortunately, other standout players like Penny Hardaway adopted these shoes as their own. 

The super-lightweight design of the AJ 9 Retro achieves a locked-down feel thanks to a “one-pull” speed lacing system and supportive upper, while the encapsulated Air-Sole unit in the heel gives the wearer optimal cushioning. A neoprene inner sleeve and solid rubber cupsole work to keep the foot in place for season-long snug comfort.

The “Cool Grey” version starts with a smooth, minimalist leather base featuring the eponymous tone, complete with perforated sections for breathability along the sides. Patent leather mudguards add structure and polish to this sneaker package with their shiny finish. A patent leather overlay also runs up the heel, with its stitched-on white No. 23, global Jumpman emblem and elongated heel tab. 


The smooth white foam midsole adds cushioning where it counts, while a semi-translucent grey rubber runs along the outsole and up the sides of the sneaker, which is adorned with a white rubber Jumpman logo. The traction pattern of the Air Jordan 9 Retro also speaks to the global reach of these shoes, with phrases including “dedicated,” “intense,” “freedom, “athletic” and “hope” written in varying languages. 

A pared-down light grey tongue features a darker grey “Air Jordan” tag and white laces cap off this retro release. Grade schoolers and adults alike can wear the Air Jordan 9 Retros at work, play or every day, thanks to comfortable features, a versatile colorway and durable, easy-to-clean materials.
