When iconic Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield set out to create the OG Air Jordan 13, he presented basketball legend Michael Jordan with drawings and mockups of what he envisioned for the collaboration. Describing Jordan’s on-court moves as those of a “big, powerful predatory cat,” Hatfield’s designs were suggestive of a black panther or leopard. Turns out, Jordan’s closest childhood friends often referred to him as “the black cat” for his quick reflexes. The design was perfect.

The original Air Jordan 13s dropped in 1997, featuring an outsole reminiscent of a large paw, while the holograms on the heel and near the ankle represent glowing eyes. That year, while wearing a pair of 13s, Jordan himself won his sixth NBA title and capped off a second three-peat.
