When Nike designer Bruce Kilgore created the first shoe in the early 1980s, he based his AF1 design on the Nike Approach hiking boot, which provided plenty of support but also allowed for optimal flexibility.
Rather than a traditional basketball shoe outsole pattern, Kilgore wanted something that gave superior traction and the ability to make quick cuts on the court. Enter the circular outsole pattern — a hallmark of the Air Force 1s. Today, the circular outsole pattern endures, along with each new release of AF1s.
What makes these particular AF1s different from those that came before them? For starters, they’re especially durable, thanks to the cutting-edge materials and construction of this reimagined retro sneaker. The GORE-TEX iteration of the men’s AF1 brings with it low- and high-top offerings complete with water- and weather-proofing material.
Other features of the AF1 GTX include a secure-fit bootie set into an outsole of the same color and an encapsulated Air-Sole unit, which provides superior cushioning. The sneaker also features the iconic Air Force 1 thick rubber outsole that guarantees long-lasting wear and traction on the court and off. Additionally, these kicks include GORE-TEX logos embroidered on the rear lateral sides of each shoe and on a fabric strip at the tongue along with a Nike swoosh that runs the length of the upper.
