Steel yourself: The Air Jordan brand is reviving a fan-favorite colorway this May. Back in 1998, the Air Jordan 13 introduced “Flint” as one of its OG color palettes, featuring swoops of grey suede and overlays of navy mesh.
Beginning May 30, sneakerheads and basketball fans can get their hands on the Air Jordan 13 Retro “Flint” release dressed in a navy, Flint Grey, white and University Blue palette. Find the sneaker in toddler, preschool, grade school boys’ and men’s sizes.
While the Jordan brand teased a rerelease of the colorway in 2017, the palette never materialized. And while 2020 has been tenuous, to say the least, the return of the AJ 13 “Flint” is a bright spot in the sneaker world.
A blend of Flint Grey suede and navy mesh overlays impart a nearly masculine gravitas to the basketball sneaker.
White full-grain leather bisects the middle of the shoe and finishes off the toe, creating a striking silhouette. The leather-mesh-suede combo, the light-catching 3M detailing woven into the navy mesh overlays and the AJ 13’s signature circular indentations give the shoe plenty of textural definition. Meanwhile, white laces crisscross atop the white tumbled leather throat — which includes large breathable perforations — before reaching the oversized tongue with its stitched-on, aqua-colored Jumpman insignia. Flint Grey suede swaths the sides of the sneaker, connecting at the back of the heel.
When Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 13s in the late ’90s, he played upon Michael Jordan’s agile, cat-like moves on the court. The white outsole’s rubber pods imitate feline paws, while the holographic design on the shoe’s sides suggests the glowing eyes of a cat. Clever homage aside, the rubber pods offer the wearer plenty of on-the-court and on-the-go grip, bolstered by the outsole’s strategically placed herringbone traction pattern. Comfort in the Air Jordan 13 Retro comes by way of a Phylon midsole and Zoom Air units at the forefoot and heel. Midfoot shank plates integrated into the sneaker add support to the foot.
While 1998 wasn’t the last time Air Jordan fans saw the “Flint” release (retro versions came out in both 2005 and 2010), this newest drop is reportedly one in a wider collection of Jordans called “Truest to the OG.”
