Peter Moore, Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore’s names get thrown around a lot when we’re talking Air Jordans. And while these pioneers of the Jumpman brand changed the sneaker game and shaped history, Tate Kuerbis is another designer that deserves a spotlight in the brand’s past, present and future, too.
He’s been part of the Jordan footwear team since the late ’90s and is responsible for the AJ 18 and 19. His work transcends Michael Jordan’s signature collection, as he’s also served as senior designer for Nike tennis, athletic training, football and baseball sneakers.
Kuerbis’ latest design in the Jordan portfolio is the Air Jordan 35 — a shoe informed by the ever-evolving needs of today’s athletes. Case in point: the sneaker’s innovative Eclipse Plate 2.0. This featured tech builds off the Jordan 34’s original Eclipse Plate, bisecting the midsole and the Zoom Air technology for tremendous responsiveness. The hollowed-out section lightens the overall weight of the AJ 35, and the Kurim cage adds extra support.
On April 1, the Air Jordan 35 launches in a grade school kids’ white, Metallic Silver and Hyper Jade colorway inspired by Chinese pro player Guo Ailun — the first Chinese player to sign with Jordan Brand.
In conjunction with the Jordan 35’s Eclipse Plate 2.0, carved out midsole and Kurim cage, this elegant sneaker also features an upper composed of woven textures, including Flightwire technology that emanates from the Eclipse Plate like the sun’s rays. Curvilinear leather overlays run from toe to heel and mimic the plate’s arc, with perforations toward the back. Gridded mesh runs up the middle of the sneaker, from toe to tongue.
The generously sized tongue, a design feature borrowed from the Jordan 5, includes both Jumpman branding and a thick tab to help pull these sneakers on before game time. The rubber outsole takes a traditional traction pattern and elevates it with herringbone emanating from the midfoot Jumpman logo.
Throughout the lifespan of the His Airness’ storied sneaker history, many designers have had a hand in creating signature Air models. Catch the latest release from the iconic collection, the grade school kids’ “Guo” white, Metallic Silver and Hyper Jade Jordan 35, on April 1 online or at a Hibbett | City Gear near you.
