It seems as though sneaker models of late are ditching the midfoot strap in favor of more subtle midfoot bands. But when his opponents zig, Kevin Durant zags, slicing through the defenses to chart his own path. Case in point: the new Nike KD 14 brings back the thick midfoot strap while other shoes, like the Nike Kyrie Irving line, are ditching it.
The Brooklyn Nets power forward/small forward — aka the “Slim Reaper” — is bringing the heat right in time for summer with the release of his newest signature sneaker, the Nike KD 14 “Deep Royal/Pale Coral/Coconut Milk” launching in men’s sizes on June 19 men’s sizes.
Don’t be fooled by the innocuous-sounding colors, though. A marbleized pattern of aqua, fuchsia, orange and green swirls along the shoe’s multilayered mesh upper, bisected by a thick Deep Royal midfoot strap featuring a dark coral Swoosh.
A more neutral Pale Coral tone comes into play along the wavy heel counter, the sockliner and the sides of the shoe, providing a counterbalance of calm to the otherwise psychedelic pattern. Pattern and textures aside, the shoe’s upper features a lightweight, dimensional mesh that requires no break-in period. Thicker mesh in high-abrasion spots enhances durability and helps to keep the foot in place throughout gameplay.
The Nike KD 14’s Deep Royal hook-and-loop strap lays over the laces to contribute to a secure fit. This is the first time Durant has brought back a midfoot strap since the KD 7, and this particular strap design takes inspiration from the shape of a grim reaper’s scythe while paying subtle tribute to the KD 4’s strap, too. In true Slim Reaper fashion, when you pair these shoes together, they reveal the face of a skull, striking fear in the heart of any opponent.
A full-length Air Zoom Strobel unit is stitched directly to the upper for less bulk and more responsiveness. This Zoom cushioning works in tandem with the Cushlon foam midsole for energy return and comfortable court work.
The shoe’s heel counter undulates with textured horizontal waves, which add to the chaos of the shoe’s aesthetic but cleverly keeps the heel in place. A stiff piece affixed to the midsole’s outer edge further enhances overall stability and side-to-side movement. Just beneath the white midsole, the Coconut Milk hue offers a whisper of color to the outsole, with flex grooves that are remarkably linear and contemporary in style.
TPU KD branding plays out along the tongue, “Fourteenth Edition” is stamped into the midfoot strap and small embroidered Swooshes appear near the medial-side toes.
This summer, starting on June 19, pick up the Nike KD 14 Deep Royal, Pale Coral, Coconut Milk in men’s basketball shoe sizes online and in-stores at Hibbett | City Gear.
