The adidas brand is not only pushing the boundaries when it comes to creating running shoes, they’re also pushing the possibilities of a more sustainable future. Case in point: The adidas Ultraboost DNA Primeblue sneaker, a performance shoe that takes waste from coastal communities and keeps it out of our oceans, putting it firmly underfoot.

The latest release from the Primeblue UB collection drops April 27 in a men’s non-dyed “Crew Blue” colorway online and at a Hibbett | City Gear near you.

The oceans are one of our most precious resources, which is why adidas began collaborating with Parley for the Oceans in 2015. According to the environmental organization, old or lost gill nets kill more than 100,000 marine mammals per year, destroying underwater habitats in the process.

These eco-friendly runners take that netting and transform it into a Milgard Ocean C™ material, which composes the sneaker’s cage and heel counter. Upcycled plastic waste culled from beaches and shores gets woven into adidas Primeknit fabric to create a Primeblue upper that offers durability and comfortably conforms to the foot. Recycled material also gets repurposed into the Continental™ Natural Rubber outsole.

The Primeblue knit upper includes a marine-like aesthetic, thanks to textural, horizontal lines along the throat and scale-like prints along the sides of the foot — all playing out in Crew Blue against a bone-colored, non-dyed backdrop. The Three Stripes reinforce the upper, working with the non-dyed heel counter to keep the foot in place. Boost technology forms the midsole, with its pebble-like, energy-returning foam pellets.

Saving the world takes time, effort and a willingness to make choices with sustainability in mind.
