Nike designer Eric Avar created the futuristic-looking Foamposite sneakers for Scottie Pippen. But, in a meeting about his sneaker line, Penny Hardaway got a glimpse of the Foamposite technology and the rest, as they say, is history.
This September, kick it old-school style with a pair of Nike Air Foamposite sneakers that mimic some of the original ’90s colorways. The newest men’s Nike Foamposite Ones and Little Posite Ones drop September 4 in a “Black Aurora” colorway that features a Game Royal blue with an Orlando Magic-like shimmer before fading to black with white, jagged edges.
When they first dropped in 1997, these shoes received mixed reviews. Some said they were ugly; others loved them. What, perhaps, neither side realized was that these shoes would hold their value, enduring for decades due to their cutting-edge technology, somewhat cartoonish style and exceptional comfort.
The sculpted upper and midsole employ Nike’s patented foam technology, which softens to better contour to the foot over time. This prominent feature contributes to the sneaker’s unrivaled cushioning, stability and lightweight fit. The molded upper sits on a foam-injected midsole, which tops a sturdy outsole, carbon fiber shank plate and full-length, double-stacked Zoom Air unit. The resulting tech allows for a smooth ride that makes for effortless game-winning plays.
The “Black Aurora” colorway’s upper’s black hue extends to the inner liner, tongue, laces, leather eyestays and the rubber outsole. Branded insoles feature a 1996-era NBA All-Star Game theme, paying tribute to that year’s Eastern Conference-winning team that included Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway and Michael Jordan.
Inspired by the OG sneakers, other key features of the “Black Aurora” Foamposite Ones and the Little Posite Ones include a white star appearing on the black tongue tab, Hardaway’s one-cent logo embroidered at the heel and tucked just beneath the laces, and a Game Royal-toned herringbone traction pattern integrated into the outsole.
Your team may not include a Michael Jordan or a Shaquille O’Neal, but when you lace up a pair of Nike Foamposite Ones or Little Posite Ones, you can get the legendary comfort these shoes promise. Beginning September 4, stop into your nearest Hibbett | City Gear, or shop online for a pair of the “Black Aurora” basketball sneakers available in men’s, infant, preschool and grade school kids’ sizes.
