Basketball shoes get a lot of press, but it’s time to start sharing some of the spotlight with America’s original favorite pastime: Baseball! Throughout his 22-year Major League Baseball career, Ken Griffey Jr. had 630 home runs and was a familiar figure on the field during All-Star games throughout the 1990s – cementing his on-field legacy for generations.

“The Kid” recently returned to the diamond in a senior advisory role, and on February 15, Nike is resurrecting the player’s namesake sneaker, the Nike Air Griffey Max 1. The high top sneaker will launch in its iconic black, white and teal “Freshwater” colorway for both grade school kids and men.

The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” initially debuted in the 1990s dressed in Seattle Mariners colors, at the height of Junior’s playing career. The shoe has enjoyed several retro releases since then.

This decidedly ’90s-era shoe is big, bold and chunky, relying on synthetic leather layers for texture and nuance. A white upper is sandwiched between the shoe’s black fabric throat construction and a black mudguard that outlines the midsole. A black Swoosh curves toward the toe as if pointing to the red tab at the bottom of the all-black lacing system.

Black detailing rests atop the trio of Max Air windows that expose the shoe’s teal cushioning through the clear bubbles along the sides. Another window at the back of the sneaker ties in nicely with the heel’s teal-outlined, embroidered Swoosh and teal heel tab.

For wearers who appreciate a little extra security, Griffey fans will appreciate the thick hook-and-loop ankle strap finished with the No. 24 and a small Swoosh. A predominantly black midsole mixes it up a bit with white and teal traction patterns, a grey Swoosh and a subtle logo featuring the signature red stitches of a baseball.
