Softball Gear Buying Guide: What You Need for the Season

Softball is a sport that demands both skill and the right equipment. Whether you’re a seasoned slugger or your child is a budding base runner, having the right gear can make all the difference on the field. A softball bat is arguably the most crucial component for scoring, but you’ll want to take a few things into consideration when selecting the right one:

  • Material: Metal alloy bats from brands like DeMarini, Easton and StringKing are affordable and ideal for beginners, while composite bats offer more pop and a larger sweet spot for experienced players.
  • Drop Weight: This is the difference between the bat’s length and its weight in ounces. A lower drop weight equals a heavier bat, ideal for stronger hitters. Younger players definitely benefit from lighter bats, like one with a –12 drop weight.

Youth softball leagues typically don’t allow metal cleats on the field, even though they provide the most traction. Older players may use metal cleats since they provide the best traction, but check with your league before purchasing.
