Sneakers Release – Jordan Zion 1 “Marion” Men’s & Kids’ Shoe Dropping 5/26

May 13, 2021

Anyone who knows Zion Williamson’s story knows his game took off at the private school he attended in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

So, many fans may be surprised to learn that Williamson’s latest sneaker release pays tribute, not to Spartanburg but Marion, South Carolina — the place where his passion for basketball bloomed. The Hyper Pink, Dark Beetroot and Metallic Silver Jordan Zion 1 “Marion” colorway releases on May 26 in toddler, preschool, grade school and men’s sizes.

When Williamson moved to Marion, his mom Sharonda coached his middle school team, and a young Zion learned to really love the game. The “Marion” sneaker pays tribute to this foundational place that shaped the trajectory of his career and how far he’s come.

Unlike the Zion 1 “Noah” that released earlier this month, featuring a rainbow patterned outsole, this latest colorway opts for a Hyper Pink outsole, with its white midsole bisecting the forefoot and heel traction patterns. Within the traction pattern, Williamson pay homage to those places and people who helped him become an NBA superstar, including — most notably for this release — Johnakin Middle School in Marion, South Carolina. His mom, coach, brother and, yes, Spartanburg also get shouts out.

Hyper Pink coloring also lines the back of the tongue and the forefoot bands that play out along the bottom laces. White mesh overlays dress the shoe’s toe, partially covering the forefoot bands, and a TPU treatment coats high-wear areas. The back half of the sneaker gets a futuristic, Metallic Silver TPU treatment and silver nylon gridded fabric.

Dark Beetroot gives the shoe some of its gravitas, lining the generously padded collar and swathing the padded throat where strategic padding shields the top of the foot while contributing to the overall snugness of the sneaker. White laces zig-zag through the eye stays and end at the Jumpman insignia on one shoe and Zion’s signature on the other. Another graffiti-style vertical signature runs up the maroon heel tab. A thick white midsole houses an Air Strobel unit that’s attached directly atop Zoom Air for plenty of bouncy energy return and comfort.

Zion Williamson may have made it big (thanks to his years of training, can-do attitude, and his big-money deal from Jordan), but each of his sneaker colorways pays homage to his humble roots.
