A lot of memorable things happened in 1997. Dolly the sheep became the first cloned animal. Pokemon debuted in the United States, and Harry Potter hit bookstores. It also marked the first time Nike Foamposite hit the market. All these years later, you can purchase your own fresh pair of Foamposite shoes in stores or online at Hibbett | City Gear.

Who Made Foamposite?

Created by Nike designers Eric Avar and Jeff Johnson, the Nike Foamposite shoe broke new ground with its otherworldly design and, of course, its Foamposite technology. “There was this notion of ‘What if you literally just dipped your foot in this liquid bath of material, and it just sucked around your foot?’” Avar said at the time. “‘And what if you could go play basketball in that?’” Hence, the inspiration behind Nike Foamposite technology.

While the Foamposite shoe deserves its place in history and on the court, Avar got plenty of resistance to his team’s initial big idea. That is until the one and only Penny Hardaway laid his eyes on the Foamposite shoe design and fell in love. So in 1997, Nike Air Foamposite One and Air Foamposite Pro debuted to plenty of fanfare. Sneakerheads, trendsetters and basketball players alike embraced the new kicks.

Now, decades later, Nike Foamposite shoes live on as a sneaker mainstay with new releases dropping and full-family sizing. Looking for women’s or men’s Foamposite shoes? What about preschool, grade school and toddler Foamposites? Even baby Foamposites offer cradled comfort for tiny footprints.

How Do Foamposites Fit?

The exceedingly simple design delivers out-of-this-world benefits. Nike Foamposite technology involves a polyurethane liquid molded into a distinctive, foam-like upper. The resulting shoe is lightweight, super durable, built for performance and provides a snug fit to the wearer’s foot, even softening over time to further mold to the foot for a more custom fit. The Foamposite One shoe also includes a full-length Zoom Air unit and a carbon fiber plate in the midsole.

The Foamposite One debuted in the Royal colorway, followed by the Foamposite Pro’s introduction that fall. In 2001, a retro version of the Foamposite Pro appeared for the first time, and 2007 brought back retro versions of the One.

The Foamposite Legend Lives On

Over the years, the Nike Foamposite shoe has proved its staying power with standout models, including the Flightposite, Hyperposite and kids’ sizes in the Little Posite. (Nike even has infant Foamposite crib bootie models.) This futuristic shoe has featured both monochromatic and vibrant colorways, including 2012’s One NRG Galaxy colorway with twinkling galaxy lights and the Yeezy-inspired Pure Platinum Air Foamposite Pro.

Whether you’re a baller or a collector, you need to add this groundbreaking shoe to your closet. Stop by a Hibbett | City Gear location or shop online today.
