6 Tips on Running Outside in the Winter

Dec 20, 2023

Brrr! It’s chilly outside (but, hey, after that super-hot summer, we’ll take it!). Don’t let cold weather freeze up your fitness goals, though. Rather than hitting the treadmill every day, you probably still want to get outside and run — whether to feel the wind on your face, soak in some vitamin D or just break out of a routine.

The right prep and gear can keep you both warm and motivated throughout the cold weather running season. Here’s our guide to all things running throughout wintry conditions, including finding the right winter running shoes and gear.

Layer Up!

Layer Up!

If you haven’t already, it’s time to take a layered approach to your cold-weather running outfit. Here’s our tried-and-true recipe for success:

Protect Your Extremities from Extreme Cold

Few things are as miserable as that sharp pain in your ears or your chest after you’ve completed a run in the cold. Protect your head, hands, neck and part of your face. Think accessories like a beanie, hat or headband to keep ears and head protected, gloves for your hands, and a scarf or gaiter to cover your face and neck.

Choose Your Shoes

Now is not the time to skimp on a pair of sneakers. Look for running shoes with good traction to avoid sliding on ice or slipping in snow or on wet pavement. Trail running shoes or weather-proof options like the Brooks Ghost 14 GTX are waterproof or water-resistant and offer great grip on slippery, slide-y surfaces.

Drink Your Water

It’s easy to remember to refill your water bottle when it’s hot out and you’re sweating. But it’s equally important to stay hydrated in cold weather. Make sure to get those sips in before, during and after any run. We’ve got a range of on-the-go sports bottles from Nike, HydroJug and Gatorade.

Slow & Steady

Make sure you warm up and cool down. Then start your run slowly, gradually going faster throughout your run. This will gradually warm up those muscles and help prevent injuries in the process.

Plan Out Your Run

You may be an early a.m. riser or a late-afternoon runner in the warmer months, but when it gets darker earlier and the temps plummet, you may want to rethink your running schedule. If possible, consider running during the day when the sun’s out. Not only will this keep you at least a bit warmer, but you’ll be able to better spot icy patches and slippery spots on the trail, track or pavement during the daytime.

With the right prep and cold-weather running gear, you can enjoy the benefits of running outside in the winter, including improved cardiovascular health, increased mood and a stronger immune system. (Tis the season of cold, flu and all respiratory things, after all!)
