Are you ready for HBCU Week 2022? There are currently 105 HBCUs in the United States, and a few of these top institutions will have a football face-off in the coming weeks during HBCU Week 2022.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a sense of great pride for the Black community and the entire nation. The Higher Education Act of 1965 defines an HBCU as any historically Black college or university established prior to 1964 whose principal goal was, and is, the education of Black Americans.
Hibbett | City Gear is excited to be part of the Magic City Classic and the Southern Heritage Classic, and we want to make sure you know how to deck yourself out in fan gear during HBCU Week.
Magic City Classic: Bulldogs vs. Hornets
The Magic City Classic is the largest HBCU football game in the country, bringing thousands of fans to the Birmingham area. On Oct. 27, 2022, the festivities kick off, including a parade and tailgate. On Saturday, the 29th, the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs and the Alabama State University Hornets will line up at Legion Field to determine this year’s winner, who will potentially gain a spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships.
How to Dress for the Game
Whether you’re attending the game or enjoying yourself at a decked-out RV at the tailgate, you need gear to showcase your HBCU pride, whether you’re going with A&M’s maroon and white or Alabama State’s black and old gold.
- Grab a men’s Timberland hoodie and a pair of black Timberland joggers. Finish off your look with some wheat boots and an adjustable hat.
- Get ready for the game with a Champion HBCU shirt or hoodie or men’s Champion HBCU tee featuring Alabama A&M University and all the tailgating supplies you need to host the perfect party.
- Show off your pride with Mitchell & Ness HBCU apparel. Throw on some King Ice shades to keep the sun out of your eyes whether you’re in the stands or grilling up some game grub.
Southern Heritage Classic: Tigers vs. Tigers
This matchup between longtime rival teams — the Jackson State University Tigers and the Tennessee State University Tigers — is one of the country’s most anticipated HBCU football showdowns. The 33rd annual celebration kicks off Sept. 8-9, with festivities that include concerts, luncheons and a Funk Fest. On Sept. 10, 2022, thousands of fans will gather at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis to see which team will leave with bragging rights.
How to Dress for the Game
No matter which Tiger team you’re rooting for, we have the threads you need to show your school pride come gameday.
- Match a men’s Champion HBCU Jackson State University tee or a blue Dodgers jersey with jeans and a pair of white Nike Air Max 90s. Don’t forget a lunch tote to keep drinks cold while you’re tailgating

- Make way for the next generation in a Champion “HBCU Made” youth tee and boys’ Champion shorts. Grab him a pair of boys’ Champion sneaks, and he’ll be ready for HBCU Week and gameday.
