Everything and everyone is going full force after a few years of uncertainty. Now that Halloween has wrapped, November is a great time to take a breather, slow down (a tiny bit), and focus on the season of gratitude.

So let’s call 2022 the year of simple Thanksgiving family outfits. Because wherever you’re spending your Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving, it’s not the clothes that matter, but the people with whom you gather.

With that in mind, here are a few guidelines for creating your best Thanksgiving outfits for 2022.

Roomy Fits

If you’ve never watched one of the many iconic Thanksgiving “Friends” episodes, you’ll need to rectify that immediately. Then, you’ll want to summon your inner Joey Tribbiani when picking your Thanksgiving fit. You don’t have to wear maternity pants like he did, but forget those slim-cut shirts or skinny jeans. Think roomy clothing that’ll accommodate turkey, stuffing and pie.

Go with straight-leg denim with a bit of give in the waistband or joggers with an elastic waist. Size your hoodies or sweatshirts up, and don’t even think about counting calories. Enjoy your meal, take a post-turkey nap, and maybe go on a leisurely walk later.

Toned-Down Colors with a Twist

Jewel tones and neutrals are both having big moments this season, so dress like your Thanksgiving table — brown foods with rich, orange sweet potatoes and ruby-red cranberries to complement the main meal. Go with a neutral sweat set, and add a pop of color with your shoes. Choose a bright track suit in berry red, and tone it down with tan sneaks. Find neutral-toned plaid shirts for your Thanksgiving family outfits. Go all gray with your athleisure wear, but add shiny accessories or a swipe of bold lip color.

Layers of Clothes

Thanksgiving is that in-between time of year — it’s fall, but not winter, not Halloween or Christmas. The weather could be warm or unseasonably cold, depending on where you live or where you’re traveling. Build out your Thanksgiving family outfits with layers, particularly if you have little ones. Start with light long-sleeve shirts, add a light sweater or sweatshirt, and incorporate more layers, like jackets and hats, as needed.

While not the flashiest holiday of the year, Thanksgiving gives you the opportunity to chow down on comfort foods — steaming turkey, just-out-the-oven rolls and creamy casseroles.
