Ballin' in Boutwell

Oct 24, 2025

Ballin' in Boutwell brought college basketball and community spirit to downtown Birmingham, reimagining the historic Boutwell Auditorium for a multi-day celebration. The event featured intense games from teams like Auburn, Oklahoma State, and Alabama, blending sport with nostalgia and a deeper purpose. Beyond the competition, it highlighted community investment through initiatives like Hibbett & Nike's First String, which supported Huffman High School.

The historic Boutwell Auditorium took on a new life this October as Ballin’ in Boutwell returned to downtown Birmingham, bringing together college basketball programs, community partners, and fans for a multi-day celebration of sport and local pride.

The event, which has quickly become a highlight on Birmingham’s fall calendar, showcased competitive matchups, including Alabama A&M, Samford, Auburn, Oklahoma State, and the University of Alabama. Beyond the games themselves, the event reflected what can happen when tradition, innovation, and community align in one place.

Few venues in Alabama carry as much history as Boutwell Auditorium. Normally home to concerts and community events, the building was reimagined for basketball, complete with updated lighting, digital displays, and a court setup that created a close, immersive experience for fans.

The result was a unique mix of nostalgia and new energy. The sound of sneakers on hardwood filled the same walls that have hosted decades of city milestones. For players and spectators alike, it was more than a venue — it was a reminder of Birmingham’s deep sports heritage and its capacity to evolve.

Throughout the week, Ballin’ in Boutwell offered a slate of competitive basketball featuring programs from across the region.

The opening games between Alabama A&M and Samford set the tone for the event, showcasing local programs and highlighting the depth of basketball talent in Alabama.

The Auburn vs. Oklahoma State game delivered one of the most intense finishes of the week. After trading runs throughout regulation, the teams battled into overtime before Oklahoma State escaped with a narrow 97–95 win. The game’s energy matched that of a postseason matchup, with every possession amplified by the intimacy of the arena.

Equally notable was the women’s matchup between the University of Alabama and Florida State. The two programs brought focus, execution, and physicality to the court, drawing strong support from fans who appreciated the level of competition. The game reinforced the continued growth and recognition of women’s basketball — and demonstrated that it commands just as much excitement and respect on this stage.

While the basketball on the court drew headlines, one of the most meaningful moments came during a special presentation recognizing Huffman High School through Hibbett and Nike’s First String initiative.

First String is designed to empower young athletes by providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities to grow both athletically and academically. During the event, the Huffman basketball program received new uniforms and equipment, reinforcing Hibbett’s commitment to supporting local schools and building the next generation of leaders through sport.

The presentation was a powerful reminder that Ballin’ in Boutwell is not just about competition — it’s about connection and investment in the Birmingham community.
