The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Cincinnati” men’s and grade school kids’ shoe drops March 30 at Hibbett | City Gear.
Ken Griffey Jr. had an illustrious career with the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox. But of those teams, he spent the most time in Cincinnati — so it makes sense that Nike would want to embrace his time as a Red.
The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Cincinnati Reds” pay homage to the hall-of-famer’s nine-year career in Cincinnati. Recognize the 13-time All-Star when you get these shoes in men’s or grade school kids’ sizes on March 30.
Griffey Jr.’s first signature shoe still has the original 1996 style — just in vibrant new colors. The Tracy Teague design boasts a light gray leather and nubuck upper with plenty of flourishes. Stitched-on overlays wrap around the toe and border the midsole in wavy shapes, peaking at the heel. Two eyestay overlays hold white webbing eyelets in place. The traditional white laces strap up over a creamy tongue that includes a red tongue tab with an embroidered white Swoosh.
Of course, there’s also a red lockdown ankle strap that velcros over top of all this. Each strap reads “Nike” in an oversized font. On the velcro strap, you’ll see “24” — the Swingman’s number — in white. You’ll see another key bit of branding at the lateral toe, which has a red Swoosh outlined in white embroidery. This same motif appears again at the heel, along with a plain red heel tab.
A wavy white midsole features several peek-a-boo panels to showcase the Air units at the forefoot and heel. Hovering above these are red inserts for a splash of color. The toe is also red, as is the rubber outsole underneath. It does feature white branding and a fiery baseball logo on the heel.
Today, you likely wouldn’t wear these shoes for baseball or basketball, rather, they’re best for everyday life. Considering the high ankle, they’d look best with either tapered jeans or athletic shorts. Pair them with a vintage Griffey Jr. jersey, and you’ll look like the ultimate fan.
While the Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Cincinnati Reds” won’t help you join the 500 home run club with Griffey Jr., they can give you the swagger you need to pretend like you’re a member.
