Retro shoes are great, but they often lack modern touches. Restomods, on the other hand, combine the best of both worlds — a “restoration” of a past model, along with some “modified” components to bring them into the future.

We’ve seen plenty of Agent Gil restomods in the past, but it looks like adidas isn’t slowing down any time soon. The adidas Agent Gil in Pyrite, white and black is dropping in styles created for the latest generation. After a much-delayed release (it was originally scheduled for December 2021), it’s finally coming to stores on September 11.

A mostly white upper has ventilation holes in the toe box and across the middle. It’s broken up only by Pyrite detailing across the middle, toe tip and heel. The middle accent mimics the look of a strap, coming up and over the tongue. You’ll see a tiny Three Stripes at the top of the lace box, along with white laces locked in place with silver eyestays.

The white tongue has black and Pyrite “Formotion” branding, but this isn’t the only promotional spot. There’s also a traditional adidas logo on the heel, as well as a Gil Boost emblem on the lateral midsole. The oversized Boost midsole also has a giant Three Stripes logo in black on the lateral heel. On the outsole, black Formotion pods give you grip on the court or on the slick streets. There are also white and Pyrite traction patterns for even more stability in slippery zones.

Gilbert Arenas has had a storied past, with a string of incidents that caused adidas to stop sponsoring him in 2009. Still, it looks like the brand believes in nostalgia enough to revive this shoe. We recommend pairing it with your favorite casual joggers and a nice pair of black crew socks — perhaps featuring the retro adidas Trefoil.

Good things come to those who wait, and that’s especially true of the adidas Agent Gil Restomod in white, Pyrite and black. This long-anticipated release can finally be yours on September 11, when it drops in men’s sizes online and at your local Hibbett | City Gear.
