The Jordan 11 made its official debut during the Chicago Bull’s second-round series against the Orlando Magic in 1995 in the Dark Concord colorway. The moment Michael Jordan stepped onto the court, the sneaker became an instant classic, which has seen 23 retro releases and two player exclusives hit shelves in the last decade and half. This latest release skillfully incorporates the most recognizable design elements of the OG “Bred” Jordan 11, which released shortly after the Dark Concord colorway in 1996, creating a shoe nearly identical to the one that upended the sneaker world in the mid-1990s.

When Nike designer Tinker Hatfield began his initial design for the AJ 11, His Airness was enjoying his first retirement as a minor league baseball player. But despite his absence from the NBA, Jordan was very much present during the sneaker’s development. His vision for the eleventh release in his namesake collection was a basketball shoe that could be worn both on the court and off. MJ’s inspiration: a tuxedo.

To create the OG Jordan 11’s suave aesthetic, Hatfield stitched patent leather to the side of the upper. Other features included a full-length Air-Sole unit, visible carbon fiber plate and a Phylon midsole.

While many Air Jordan models transcend the boundaries of basketball, the original Jordan 11, and now the black, red and white Jordan 11 Retro, seamlessly moves from the court to the red carpet. It’s a true lifestyle shoe with timeless fashion sense thanks to Hatfield’s thoughtful vision and His Airness’ star power.

Gentle curves organically define the Air Jordan 11 Retro, transforming a traditional bulky silhouette into a more refined package. The slick black patent leather slopes around the shoe’s upper before giving way to a high-cut black Cordura nylon treatment. The nylon offers just the right amount of flexibility at the top of the foot.

The patent leather offers a premium look, is incredibly durable and conforms to your foot. Another hallmark of the OG Bred release, the Air Jordan 11 Retro includes a Red outsole, which features strategically placed traction patterns in Black and the Jumpman logo in Red. The original model’s full-length Air unit carries over into the Retro version, too. The shoe’s branding closely mimics that of the ’95 release, complete with the embroidered tongue strip, No. 23 on the heel and red-stitched Jumpman logo at the black leather collar.

A reinforced lacing system radiates from the patent leather stitching and loops at the top for a more custom fit. Sandwiched between the upper and outsole, the textured White Phylon midsole counterbalances the Black and Red color and offers lightweight cushioning. The midfoot also contains the carbon fiber shank plate, a defining feature of the 11s. The tech offers just the right amount of rigidity for quick cuts and career-defining plays.

Some of MJ’s all-time favorite shoes, the 11s continue to enjoy global success with each release. This December’s hotly-anticipated Bred colorway will likely fly off the shelves.
