The Air Jordan 12 Retro, an all-time favorite among players and sneakerheads, drop on August 22 in an “Indigo” or “Stone Blue” colorway comprised of Stone Blue, Legend Blue and Obsidian. Grade school boys’ and men’s sizes will be available at Hibbett | City gear online and in stores.
When the Jordan 12 was first released, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield brought Zoom Air technology to the new basketball shoes. He also added mudguards and a unique Japanese rising sun molded textile design that resonated throughout the sneakersphere. Adding to the buzz, Michael Jordan went on to capture his fifth title with the Bulls while wearing the kicks, securing the sneakers’ enduring legacy.
In this re-mastered edition, the eye-catching, dyed leather upper features tonal top-stitching throughout the sidewalls that radiate from the shoe’s base. Smooth white leather overlays punctuate the upper from the mid panel to the toes, providing eye-catching design and bolstered durability. Other details include dual silver eyelet hooks at the upper quarters, sleek round laces, finely padded collars, bold backstays with Jordan logo heel pulls and bright white mudguards bedecked in the OG lizard pattern.
Subtle branding hits like MJ’s number 23 appear on the sole, the wrapped heel and spelled out as “TWO3” on the tongue. The Jumpman logo also appears on the upper back, at the toe tip on the sole, on the footbed and embroidered on the tongue. A reverse molding inlay on the mid panel spells out “Jumpman.”
The sneakers’ foam midsole conceals a carbon shank plate, which creates a better ride and greater stability. Combined with a full-length Air-Sole unit, the shoe is lighter than past versions, despite doubling down on cushioning. A translucent rubber outsole cradles black herringbone-patterned treads inset in the heel and forefoot for optimal traction.
These kicks are also tagged with a reminder that reads: “The Beauty of Imperfection, Fades to Perfection.” This likely refers to the indigo blue uppers’ subtle fade from heel to toe box. As one of the oldest dyes used for fabric and textile dyeing — dating back more than 6,000 years — indigo is a historic color made from an organic compound found most notably in plants from the genus Indigofera. The Jordan 12 “Stone Blue” (Indigo) is a tribute to the color’s staying power.
