Michael Jordan’s obsession with sports cars is well-documented. Throughout his playing career, Jordan was regularly seen driving Corvettes, Ferraris and Porsches to and from practice and press conferences. So when Nike’s Tinker Hatfield set out to work on Jordan’s 14th signature shoe, he took inspiration from MJ’s need for speed.
A blend of real and synthetic leathers comprises the shoe’s upper. Smooth leather plays out on the toe, while horizontally ribbed side panels feature a series of strategic perforations for maximum breathability. Though most of the upper is white, the varied stitching, textures and perforations give the shoe its depth and gracefulness.
Shiny Hyper Royal overlays, along with a carbon fiber midfoot shank plate, lend the sneaker strategic stability critical during the heat of the game. The tongue of this shoe is perhaps its most standout feature. A sports car spoiler-like tongue gets the Hyper Royal Jordan branding. A Ferrari-like feature includes the black-and-white Jumpman badge incorporated into the sides of the shoe.
The shoe’s hidden lacing system contributes to the shoe’s sophisticated sleekness. Underfoot, the white Phylon midsole encapsulates the Zoom Air units in the heel and the forefoot, providing lightweight cushioning. The rubber outsole’s large herringbone pattern offers any wearer a game-winning grip for speedy moves on the court or the playground.
