As temperatures rise and the season for snow sports shortens, Nike is on a mission to help combat climate change. They’re working to preserve the future of sports and the planet by committing to zero carbon and zero waste — a campaign the company calls “Move to Zero.”
Just in time for fall, Nike is releasing a quintet of sneakers made with recycled materials. Four of the shoes are part of the Nike Sportswear Recycled Canvas pack, while the Space Hippie release challenges design norms with its use of factory scraps incorporated into the shoe’s makeup.
Find the following array of men’s and women’s colorways on September 20:
While not expressly part of the recycled shoe releases, a “Smoke Grey” rendition of the women’s Air Jordan 6 Retro rounds out this massive launch lineup.
The Daybreak Type, Air Force 1, Air Max 90 and 95 each have 20% recycled uppers crafted from yarn partially composed of post-industrial Nike textile waste. The shoes also incorporate recycled foam tongues and laces and 50% leather fiber in the Swooshes and tabs.
The recently relaunched Nike Daybreak Type — a 1979 classic — has a deconstructed, inside-out look with an Iron Grey canvas upper that features a crudely stitched Swoosh outline and zig-zag embroidery. A white leather overlay adds structure to the heel, and Barely Volt embellishments subtly appear throughout.
Like the Daybreak, the Air Force 1 employs a similar color scheme, dressing the upper with an Iron Grey canvas, white leather Swoosh and laces, a pastel-hued throat and Barely Volt branding on the tongue and heel.
The Air Max 90 Vast Grey colorway layers various shades of grey, ranging from a grey flannel to heather, which takes center stage against the backdrop of horizontally lined TPU accents in white. Other subtle colors include Celestine Blue and Barely Volt.
Perhaps the most colorful of the pack, the Air Max 95 features wavelike layers of muted colors ranging from pink and brown to purple and blue, capped off by the Vast Grey, which climbs the shoe’s throat. Hits of Barely Volt appear on the tongue and in the visible Air units, while the shoe’s white midsole, laces and heel contribute to the crisp-looking package.
And then there’s the Space Hippie 04 — an otherworldly, recently released silhouette in the Nike portfolio. One of the two iterations comes dressed in a Light Arctic Pink “Space Waste” (recycled factory scraps) knit upper with a woven black Swoosh and black cable laces. Lemon Venom elastic threads through the Arctic Pink upper for an impactful design element that also serves as the shoe’s lacing system. A prominent heel pull gets the Lemon Venom treatment as well. The shoe’s thick Crater Foam base combines Nike Grind rubber and foam materials. The other rendition gets a “Grey Volt” treatment, a concrete-like sneaker with impactful hits of black.
