The toddler, preschool, grade school boys’ and men’s Air Jordan 9 Retro“University Gold”, dressed in black and Charcoal Gray with hits of gold, releases online and in-stores at Hibbett | City Gear on January 30.
While Tinker Hatfield created these sneakers with Michael Jordan in mind, His Airness never actually wore these shoes in a regular-season game. He was off trying his hand at baseball when they released. Luckily, other players sported the basketball kicks on the court, and the shoes became a sneaker culture staple.
With the “University Gold” edition, luxe black suede swaths the upper, reinforced with a charcoal nubuck leather outline. University Gold trims the sockliner, plays along the Air Jordan tongue tag and embellishes the shoe’s Jumpman details.
In addition to the yellow-outlined No. 23 embroidered on the heel, the Jumpman set against a globe backdrop is a nod to the globalization of the Jordan Brand, that began with the AJ 9.
While heavy in color, these kicks are light enough to wear during play, on the street and the court. The supportive upper with its neoprene inner sleeve gives way to soft foam cushioning and an encapsulated Air-Sole unit in the heel. A solid rubber cupsole helps hold the foot in place, and the rubber traction pattern provides a ground-hugging grip for players of all ages.
