When you think of the Lunar New Year, you might envision rich reds and golds. New Balance is trying to change that with a new take on the holiday.

The New Balance 550 “Lunar New Year” instead boasts heavy doses of cream and silver. The clean-looking kick is set to debut just in time for the turning of the calendar on December 30, and it’ll be available in men’s sizes.

Inspired by the Year of the Rabbit, the shoe’s upper is a creamy white. A ventilated overlay covers the middle beneath a white New Balance logo. There are additional darker cream overlays below the ankle and above the midsole around the heel. Overall, the vibe is of a slightly worn shoe that looks like it might have come from the ’80s.

Speaking of the heel, it features an embroidered red New Balance logo for a bit of color. You’ll see additional branding on the tongue, which reads “New Balance 550” in red. Otherwise, the tongue and laces are the same color as the rest of the shoe, as are the eyestays. The insole, however, appears to be red with black branding.

All of this sits atop a very light grey midsole. On the lateral side, you’ll notice New Balance branding right at the midfoot. The medial midsole, on the other hand, curves downward at the midfoot for a sleek appearance.

The bottom of the shoe features a rubber outsole in the same darker cream color as the overlays. It’s meant to offer both traction and durability — though with its light color, we wouldn’t recommend wearing it outside much.

The shoe’s soft, neutral tones give you plenty of room to play with the rest of your outfit. You can embrace the Lunar New Year with red joggers and a golden shirt. Or, if you really want to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, throw on a pair of red crew socks, khaki shorts and a cartoon rabbit shirt.
