Throughout the 1990s, it seemed like every NBA player wanted to be on the big screen. Superstars like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Dennis Rodman and Shaquille O’Neal all tried their hand at acting. O’Neal starred in more than one movie, including 1994’s “Blue Chips” alongside Orlando Magic player Penny Hardaway. The movie centers around a basketball coach on the brink of his first-ever losing season who recruits three promising players (Hardaway, O’Neal and Matt Rover) to help turn his team around.
This February 18, the Nike Air Penny V “Blue Chips” edition will be released to commemorate the movie’s 26th anniversary in a Bright Blue, Yellow Streak and white colorway.
While the Penny V’s color palette throws it back to mid-‘90s basketball drama, this sneaker gets a modern design built for today’s players.
The Air Penny V is all graceful swoops and elegant angles. Like Hardaway’s moves, this shoe features a masterfully constructed upper. Layers of blue leather, fused mesh and synthetic materials meet a white Foamposite layer in wavelike designs. The white Phylon midsole gives the shoe its lightweight cushioning synonymous with today’s most trusted performance kicks. The midsole’s carbon fiber plate offers distinctive style and stability, and a bootie-like upper construction gets an extra secure boost from its lacing system for the perfect fit.
Sandwiched between the outsole and midsole, Max Air units sit at the forefoot and heel, allowing for those explosive, movie-style plays. An icy translucent outsole includes Bright Blue rubber pads for game-lasting traction. A series of understated Swooshes make appearances on both sides of the shoe, and the heel tab, outsole, heel and tongue get the Midas touch with Penny’s 1-cent logo.
