Sneakers Release – Nike Cosmic Unity “Natural” Out 4/1

Mar 24, 2021

You’ve seen the Nike Space Hippie with its far-out design and innovative use of recycled materials that merge to create a chunky lifestyle shoe. Now, a little more than a year after the Space Hippie’s release, Nike is rolling out a new line of sustainable sneakers, built not for the streets but for the basketball court. The Nike Cosmic Unity is just the latest in a full lineup of shoes that further the brand’s “Move to Zero” commitment — a major effort to pivot to a zero-waste, zero-carbon future.

A Black/Volt colorway released earlier this year, and on April 1, the Nike Cosmic Unity will launch in an “Natural” colorway, featuring Natural, Total Orange and Green Glow elements, exclusively in men’s sizes.

L.A. Lakers player Anthony Davis wore a pair of Cosmic Unity kicks on the court recently, showcasing that these “trashy” sneakers don’t sacrifice performance or wearability.

Cosmic Unity sneakers are composed of 25% recycled material by weight, including a partially recycled Air Zoom Strobel, recyclable materials in the midsole, outsole, lacing system and upper.

If you’re looking for a basketball shoe with character, this is it. Recycled cable yarn composes the sneaker’s upper. Direct fiber placement by way of cable net overlays forms a grid over the upper. The shoe’s collar features undulating waves of textural lines, while a strap-like lacing system runs vertically up the shoe’s throat ending in a tab near the ankle. A marbled Swoosh is prominently placed along the shoe’s sides.

Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the Cosmic Unity sneaker is its curved Crater Foam midsole piece. Nike’s Crater Foam employs brand-patented foam blended with 10% Nike Grind Rubber. Holes, or “craters,” in the foam reduce the Cosmic Unity’s overall weight.

It’s one thing to create the first-ever sustainable bball sneaker; it’s another to make sure it can perform. Nike basketball shoes, after all, are notorious for their use of new technologies. The Cosmic Unity incorporates a full-length TPU Air Zoom Strobel unit stitched directly to the midsole for springy energy return on the court. A zig-zag outsole pattern composed of a thin layer of rubber gives a solid, grounded feel and complete control of on-court movement.

Maya Angelou once said that “when you know better, you do better.” Nike’s “Move Toward Zero” recognizes the need to be better stewards of the planet to pave the way for future generations of athletes. Do your part for our planet when you shop the “Amalgam” Natural, Total Orange and Green Glow men’s Nike Cosmic Unity basketball shoe on April 1.
