Spring has brought a decidedly hopeful note to the year, particularly as it inches ever closer to summer. The end of a school year means more free time for play — whether that’s a game of basketball in the driveway, a bike ride with the neighborhood kids or a getaway to the beach. Beginning May 8, the Nike Kyrie 7 drops in two perfect, fun-loving summer-ready colorways for children of all ages: “Stuntman” and “Beach Camo.”
The “Beach Camo” Kyrie 7 comes dressed predominantly in Grain with notes of aquamarine and Tropical Twist. These shoes will launch in toddler and preschool sizes. The appropriately named “Stuntman” colorway incorporates yellow and grey into its toddler, preschool and grade school-sized basketball sneakers.
These Nike basketball shoes give kids the agility they need to succeed, whether on the court or the playground. A breathable, composite mesh overlay encompasses the shoe’s textile upper with its swirling graphic pattern. The cupsole construction and molded heel piece both work to keep the foot in place throughout the day.
An outlined Swoosh adorns both medial and lateral sides of the “Stuntman” colorway, and TPU “fingers” form the shoe’s bottom two eyestays. This design element by Nike sneaker designer Benjamin Nethongkome subtly pays tribute to Irving’s father, who taught his son finger-strengthening exercises in his formative years. The TPU cage also introduces superior lockdown without the bulkiness of a traditional midfoot strap.
The shoe’s throat and tongue feature a tighter-weave mesh, and thick padding inside enhances comfort for all-day wear. Zigzags inform part of the midsole, and other design detailing includes subtle all-seeing-eye logos. Other Kyrie and Nike branding is incorporated throughout, including the embossed “His Legacy Is Going to Live on Forever” slogan that curves around the bottom of the ankle.
A Zoom Air unit in the forefoot contributes to comfort and energy return for those always-energetic toddlers and preschoolers; meanwhile, a 360-degree, data-informed traction pattern extends from the outsole up the sidewalls of the shoe for those ball-playing grade schoolers flexing their new skills.
The upper of the kids’ Kyrie 7 “Beach Camo” features a multicolor camouflage print most prominently visible along the knit throat. The camo feature has a snakeskin-feel to it and showcases a mix of black, a gradient of Grain and Tropical Twist tan. The balance of the upper is overlaid with a high-gauge mesh — more tightly woven on the shoe’s medial sides — with camo peeking through. TPU fingers along the bottom of the lacing system help hold the foot in place, bolstered by a sandy-colored heel counter.
If the Grain-toned upper mimics the sandy shores, the midsole and outsole come together to form the crystalline waters of an ocean. When your child dips his toes into these sneakers, he’s getting all the comfort and energy return of a curved Turbo Zoom unit contained in the forefoot, buoyed by the grippy traction of a 360-degree, data-informed rubber outsole. A dark aquamarine tone outlines the Swoosh and washes over the foam midsole with light speckling. The outsole zigs, zags and sparkles along the shoe’s bottom in a translucent aquamarine, which mimics a shimmering ocean.
