In the late 1990s, Eric Avar set out to create a shoe like no other. With an eye toward nature, Avar created a beetle-like shell sculpted from soft, yet supportive foam. While the basketball shoe was originally intended to be Scottie Pippen’s signature sneaker, it was Penny Hardaway that caught a glimpse of these futuristic kicks and decided he had to have them.

This summer, the beetle-bug-inspired form-fitting Foamposite-based sneaker lands in a white, black and multicolor rendition designed with little kids’ growing feet in mind. This Nike Little Posite One colorway will launch in toddler, preschool and grade school kids’ sizes on June 12.

A white molded Foamposite upper, complete with the model’s signature wavy lines, informs the majority of the shoe’s design, while black synthetic leather running up the shoe’s throat adds to its overall durability.

A pop of bright yellow covers the collar adorned with Penny Hardaway’s one-cent emblem stitched in blue and white at the heel. The black mesh inner bootie keeps your kid’s foot snugly in place, while the oversized black-and-white tongue and heel tabs make it easy to put these sneakers on. Black laces also contribute to the locked-down fit.

This colorway reportedly gets its inspiration from dirt bike culture. The middle of the shoe’s otherwise black throat is a chaotic mix of pattern and black, red, white, blue and yellow tones leading up to a racing-style one-cent logo on the tongue.

A small embroidered Swoosh on the lateral sides of the shoe continues the multicolor theme. The midfoot includes a tonal black checkerboard pattern, showing off the sneaker’s arch support with just a touch of shine. Herringbone traction patterns provide on-the-go multi-surface grip, while a large white rubber Swoosh interrupts the otherwise black outsole.
