The family legacy lives on for the Milwaukee Bucks’ star and 2019-20 Kia NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. He’s fast, fluid and exceptionally skilled, and whether he’s on the court or off, the “Greek Freak” is always mindful of his heritage and the family and friends who helped him get to where he is today.
Beginning October 1, preschool and grade school kids can learn to appreciate their own humble beginnings and steps toward greatness when they connect with Nike’s latest sneaker offering: The Nike Zoom Freak 2 kids’ basketball shoe, dressed in a white, Cement and University Red palette.
Back when Antetokounmpo was a 16-year-old kid, he began swiping his older brother’s red and white Kobe 4 sneakers. It’s unclear if this particular colorway is inspired by that formative footwear, but it does share some similarities.
Like its predecessor, the Zoom Freak 1, the Freak 2 pays homage to Antetokounmpo’s family. The insoles include his slogan – “I Am My Father’s Legacy” – and his siblings’ and parents’ names appear on the heel and rigid arch of the shoe.
The rendition of the Zoom Freak 2 features a blend of breathable mesh fabric with synthetic overlays and molded TPU pieces. The resulting upper stabilizes the foot while offering a locked-in yet airy feel.
While preK dribblers and grade school players likely won’t be executing any Euro step movements — a long lateral technique employed by the Greek Freak — the Zoom Freak 2 shoes give any kid a full range of motion and the agility to clock it down the court.
Prominent Swooshes on the shoe’s sides showcase the best of the brand. Zoom Freak logos are displayed on the tongue and heel, while Antetokounmpo’s triangle insignia appears on the sneaker’s lateral backside.
The upper rides atop an Air Zoom midsole that provides energy-returning cushion. When seconds count, the full rubber outsole is there to deliver with its decoupled outsole, bisected by a midfoot carbon fiber shank plate.
Part of the outsole’s script-like traction pattern climbs the shoe’s sidewall, reinforcing high-wear areas of the Zoom Freak 2. A TPU clip on the basketball sneaker’s outer front brings unique details made just for Antetokounmpo.
