Supply chain issues have been hitting the world hard, and Nike is not immune. That’s why the latest release from Giannis Antetokounmpo (even though it is Valentine’s Day-themed) is slated to hit stores in June.
The Nike Zoom Freak 3 “Valentine’s Day” is the Greek Freak’s nod to the February holiday. However, it doesn’t go overboard into pink territory, relying on a primarily navy and yellow color palette that can work well year-round.
Perhaps because of Giannis’s Greek ancestry, there are a few nods to Greek mythology throughout this kick. The upper is a mix of blue tones that could likely be a nod to Eros, the god of love that flew through the skies in search of someone to shoot his arrows at.
The toe cap has a patch of navy, while the majority of the upper is a denim color. There’s also a lighter navy tone at the ankle, featuring what look to be fireworks or sparks of love in pale pink. It’s in this lighter navy overlay that you’ll also see the Nike Swoosh in a pale yellow and outlined in pale pink on the lateral side. On the medial side, there’s only the pale pink outline of the Swoosh.
A navy velcro lockdown strap covers the pale yellow laces, which lace up over a navy tongue. On the left tongue is a pale pink basketball embroidered in pale blue that’s been shot through with an arrow, while the right tongue has the Giannis logo embroidered in pale pink.
Light blue lines the ankle collar and matches the insole, which features additional basketball and love-related motifs. One final piece of passion is the attached Nike Cherub hangtag featuring good old Eros himself, bow and arrow in hand.
The pale yellow midsole cascades across the shoe like a wave, broken up by a blue TPU insert in the forefoot for added stability. Meanwhile, the blue outsole features a computer-generated pattern mimicking a topographical map.
This shoe manages to convey its message without going overboard—meaning you can likely pair it with most basketball gear in your wardrobe without too much of a clash. It would look great with any blue- or navy-toned shorts or shirts—especially the Milwaukee Bucks blue that’s sometimes seen on the jersey. Gear up with your favorite joggers and a hoodie for pre-game warmups.
