Back in 2014, Joel Embiid was nursing a foot injury, hobbling around his house in a cast. The Philadelphia 76ers picked him for their team anyway. Embiid, who tuned in for the draft virtually from his home, was caught with a forlorn expression at that moment, launching a viral meme.
Today, Embiid pokes fun at his serious facial expressions, which, he says, didn’t represent how he felt. That leap toward serious NBA fame was just one more step in the journey for the Cameroon native with his self-proclaimed “The Process” nickname. Now, this memorable third draft pick is immortalized in Embiid’s latest sneaker release.
The latest Under Armour Embiid One sneaker launches in a “Draft Night” colorway, composed of a white base emboldened with a swirl of bright colors that dial up the temp of this sneaker. The shoe lands in both grade school boys’ and men’s sizes beginning December 18.
Quick reactions, lightweight, fast plays — this trifecta of goals translates into Embiid’s first signature basketball shoe. The Embiid 1’s upper has layer upon layer of crisp white mesh, along with molded overlays along the sides to boost structure, durability and breathability.
The TPU support wings not only give the foot stability, but they also introduce color into the shoe with a hot pink and neon-yellow ombre on the lateral side and a yellow and light blue on the medial.
Black appears on the sockliner and elongated heel tab. The tongue tab spans the entire lacing system and comes in white with a black accent. Flip the shoe over to see the deep, amorphous flex grooves in varying colors that offer enhanced ground grip.
To achieve lightweight comfort, the Under Armour brand included stacked HOVR technology at the heel along with Micro G foam in the forefoot. Each of these materials bolsters a player’s ability to complete history-making plays.
