New Year’s Resolution Ideas for 2024

Jan 2, 2024

Know what’s a bummer? Creating a list of New Year’s resolutions … and then forgetting all about them two days later. Sure, you can pack into the gym like everyone else that first week of January, but why not aim for resolutions you can actually achieve?

Anyway, we know you’re tired from all the end-of-2023 festivities, so we’ve done the legwork for you with six New Year’s resolution ideas you might actually stick with, whether you’re a broke student, a tired parent or an energetic twentysomething.

Hit the Snooze Button… -- old fashion analog alarm clock on night stand

Hit the Snooze Button…

(… or don’t if you actually have to get up.) Instead, stop doom-scrolling, put down your phone and get some actual sleep. Research shows that seven to eight hours of sleep a night helps improve both your physical and mental health. So why not kick off January with a regular sleep schedule and a relaxing bedtime routine that helps you wind down — no screens allowed.

Move It, Move It

We all have different abilities and different skill levels. You’re probably not going to be the NBA player you dreamed of being as a kid. Instead, focus on joyful movement by doing things you enjoy. Hate HIIT workouts or stopped getting on that Peloton? Totally OK! You don’t have to be a gym rat to achieve all your fitness goals. Queue up a podcast episode, and start by taking a 30-minute walk. Put on music in your house and dance. Run up and down the stairs of your apartment. Find an activity that feels sustainable for where you are. We promise you’ll feel amazing after.

Nourish Your Body

No food is a “bad food” when you eat it in moderation. And while thinking and research around diets and obesity have changed considerably even in the past few years, the goal is less about counting calories or restricting foods. Instead, make a conscious effort to fill your plate with fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins. Oh, and it’s totally OK to have dessert when you want it.

Spark Joy

You know that thing that you love to do, but you keep putting off doing it? We’re not doing that in the new year. Pick up those watercolors again. Play around on that guitar that’s sitting in the corner collecting dust. Read that stack of books on your bedside table. Make time for the things and the people you love.

Drink Up!

After the holiday indulgences, eliminate or limit sugary or alcoholic beverages in favor of plain old water. You have that Stanley Cup in like five colors, don’t you? So why not put them to good use? Hydration helps support your body’s functions, so aim to consume about six to eight glasses a day.

Prioritize Mental Health

If you’ve been putting off dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma or other mental obstacles, there’s never been a better time to improve your mental health. Seek out support when needed — a good therapist (or the right balance of meds) can be life-changing — prioritize self-care practices and choose activities that boost your mood. All that is easier said than done, but there is a wealth of free or low-cost resources for you to tap into to put your well-being in the front seat.
