Jayson Tatum is one of the few players to switch his allegiances in the middle of his career. The Boston Celtics forward originally signed with Nike but flipped sides when he penned a contract with Jordan Brand in 2019. Four years later, we’re finally ready to see the drop of his first signature shoe.

The Jordan Tatum 1 “Zoo” is the lightest shoe in Jordan Brand’s portfolio thanks to the lack of rubber and TPU frame throughout. This particular colorway features a mix of black, Metallic Gold, University Red and Beach and is inspired by Tatum’s son’s favorite place — the zoo. It’s dropping in full family sizing on April 7, with options for men, grade school kids, preschool kids and toddler kids.

While the inspiration here is the zoo, we’re also feeling “Bred” vibes with the red and black mesh knit upper—fitting for one of Tatum’s OG releases. The vamp of the shoe is completely black, but it’s trimmed in shiny red that outlines the oversized Beach midsole. This midsole especially pops at the lateral forefoot in a triangular shape, revealing an uncaged Zoom Air unit inside.

The shoe’s heel is where you’ll start to see the zoo theme come into play. It features red embroidery on a black base that resembles a mish-mash of animal patterns. There’s also a black heel tab featuring Tatum’s signature in red along with a golden “0,” his number since he played for Duke. The lateral side includes a golden Jumpman soaring toward an invisible hoop.

On the black tongue, you’ll see similar golden embroidery, this time in a JT logo that’s been customized for Tatum. Inside the shoe, the black insole reads “Welcome to the Zoo” in red to drive home the point that Tatum plays like a wild animal.

The Beach outsole only features rubber at the forefoot and toe, giving you the grip you need as you drive forward for your shot. The rest of the upper includes swirl tread that’ll also help you keep your footing. Like most black and red basketball shoes, the Tatum 1 “Zoo” would look great with matching gear. We’re talking black crew socks, red basketball shorts and a black jersey. Coordinate with black joggers if the spring air is still a bit chilly.

As far as introductory colorways go, the Jordan Tatum 1 “Zoo” certainly hits the mark.
