Whether it’s NBA players coming together to complete their abbreviated season in the Bubble or families finding creative ways to gather during this admittedly strange year, no matter who you call your fam, the Jordan Brand has always celebrated familial bonds and the ties that bind.
That’s what makes the brand’s newest sneaker drop so fitting. It’s a colorful celebration of all things family. Meet the Air Jordan 1 Mid “Familia” edition — a fearlessly fresh shoe dressed in a Day of the Dead-inspired white, University Gold and Cactus Flower. The shoe will launch in grade school kids’ sizes beginning October 31.
Like the roots of a family tree, this Peter Moore-designed sneaker traces its lineage back to 1984. The timeless design of the Jordan 1, coupled with time-tested technologies, continues to appeal to the current generation. Premium materials, including textiles and a blend of genuine and synthetic leathers, combine to form the upper.
Soft cushioning, a mid-cut padded ankle collar and the shoe’s Nike Air-Sole unit provide lightweight comfort for all-day play. And the sneaker’s solid rubber sole gives kids the right balance of durability and traction they need on the playground, in the school hall, on the field and in the gym.
The ever-vibrant magenta Cactus Flower color outlines the sneaker’s silhouette, crawling up the eye stays, stitched along the heel and dressing the outsole. A white toe box comes perforated for ventilation, while crisp white panels along the shoe’s sides serve as the backdrop for crackled University Gold Swooshes.
The Jordan 1’s leather collar also gets the cracked University Gold treatment and contrasting gold and magenta stitching zig-zags along the shoe’s overlays and branding. The words “Para Mi” and “Familia” appear along the lateral sides of each shoe — “Para Mi,” or “For my,” on the right shoe, “Familia” or “Family” on the left.
White mesh netting comprises the shoe’s throat, crisscrossed by waxed black laces. Both the insole design and the shoe’s tongue tag feature beautifully intricate embellishments reminiscent of papel picado, a cut-paper Mexican folk art tradition.
The ties that bind us start with family, whether that’s your sports team, close friends, classmates or extended family. This fall, grade school kids can celebrate their heritage with the Air Jordan 1 Mid “Familia” basketball sneaker.
