The Jordan 3 Retro “Desert Cement” Black/Rush Orange/Fossil Stone colorway drops in men’s and grade school kids’ sizes July 30 at Hibbett | City Gear.
What made the original Jordan 3 stand out in a sea of basketball shoes was its iconic elephant print. The shoe was Tinker Hatfield’s first foray—but certainly not his last—into the world of Jordan, and it made him an instant hall of fame designer.
Now, a new colorway of the Jordan 3 plays with the original design in an unexpected way. The Jordan Retro 3 “Desert Elephant” eschews the original elephant print design in favor of a brown leather overlay that more closely resembles elephant hide.
A Black Cement leather upper covers most of the body of the shoe, giving it a nice satin look. At the typical elephant print toe and heel overlays, you’ll see a brown suede with textured detailing—almost giving it the look of tanned elephant leather.
The tongue and lace stays are made of Fossil Rose suede that looks soft to the touch. There are some Rush Orange eyelets holding black laces in place toward the forefoot of the shoe, but these change to black eyelets around the midfoot. There’s more Rush Orange on the embroidered Jumpman tongue logo.
The back of the tongue is a fiery orange color—slightly lighter than Rush Orange. Inside the shoe, a Fossil Rose insole features a black tab along with elephant and Jumpman profiles. At the back of the shoe, you’ll see more Jordan branding. A white Jumpman soars over the word “Air.”
A cream midsole showcases the see-through Air unit, and under that, a more beige outsole features the usual pivot-circle traction pattern in orange. There’s one final bit of “Jordan” branding in orange on the heel.
When wearing this shoe, you’ll have a lot of options. The palette is overall pretty neutral, meaning it will look good with everything from black to neon orange basketball shorts. You might even throw it on with a pair of khakis to complete the street-farer-turned-desert-adventurer look.This shoe will leave you just as thirsty as the desert because it’s just as hot.
