It’s safe to assume that most of us will leave 2020 scratching our heads and saying, “What the…?”

That’s the same question the newest colorful sneaker palette from the Jordan brand asks. The special edition men’s and grade school boys’ Air Jordan 5 Retro “What The” colorway launches on November 12 and features two very different shoes. The right sneaker comes swathed in a Varsity Maize, with hits of Solar Orange and Court Purple. The left is a red shoe embellished with black and lime green.

These eclectic sneakers are yet another in the Air Jordan 5 Retro lineup that celebrates the 30th anniversary of Tinker Hatfield’s creation. The “What The” rendition is an impactful mashup of past releases. For instance, the yellow shoe is strikingly similar to the 2011 Jordan 5 Retro “Tokyo T23,” from its color base and the embroidered logo on the sides to the translucent mesh netting cutout and the grey eyestays. The new shoe, however, gets a purple midsole and purplish-blue zigzagging.

With its red upper and black midsole, the right red sneaker has a distinctly AJ 5 Retro “Raging Bull” vibe and includes the same embroidered insignia found on the AJ 5 Retro “Shanghai Shen.”

Other inspiration reportedly came from the “Green Bean,” “Army Olive,” “Bel-Air,” the “Quai 54” and “Laser RA” colorways. Each sneaker also features very different and wildly colorful graphic linings (a la the “Bel-Air” and “Quai 54” renditions, respectively).

The Air Jordan brand’s decades-long commitment to quality shines through the premium stitching, inner Air Jordan tongue tag, 3M reflective details, translucent mesh panel and the zigzags flaring along the forefoot area. Rich suede details, sturdy lace locks, plush sockliners and, of course, the visible Air-Sole unit all keep this shoe in play three decades later.

The only safe bet in the year 2020 is that there are no safe bets. So why not embrace the chaos of the unknown in a pair of kicks that demand attention? Grab a pair of the vibrant “What The” Air Jordan 5 Retro sneakers in grade school and men’s sizes. Find them in-stores or online at Hibbett | City Gear beginning November 12.
