The Jordan 9 Retro “Chile Red/Black” men’s and grade school kids’ shoe drops May 7 at Hibbett | City Gear.

The AJ Retro 9 “Chile Red” invokes a fiery red color that’s sure to spark passion on and off the court. While it’s a new colorway, it bears a striking resemblance to 2012’s “Motorboat Jones,” which featured a similar all-red upper.

These kicks are nearly all red, with a curiously quilted and stitched textile upper that lacks the typical luster of early ’90s basketball shoes. However, a more-familiar red patent leather covers the mudguard and heel.

Shiny black eyestays hold the red laces in place over top of an all-red tongue. The tongue branding does have a patch of black, along with “Air Jordan” in a red font. Red ankle padding and a red inner liner give way to a black insole. Naturally, a red Jumpman pops on this element. Another flash of black pops at the heel, with a black heel tab and embroidered “23.” In between these two elements is a red Jumpman emblem outlined in black.

A shiny red midsole adds some nice visual variance to the otherwise matte design. Beneath that, a matte black outsole features a small red Jumpman on the lateral heel. The same motif is repeated on the bottom of the shoe, along with a unique traction pattern in black that symbolizes His Airness’s on- and off-court values.

Even though this Tinker Hatfield design was the first shoe to drop after MJ’s temporary switch to baseball, it still became a basketball classic, beloved by some of the sports’ top stars. Today though, this shoe is much more of a status symbol than an on-court kick. Be classy and throw it on with a vintage Bulls jersey to match the red and black. Black crew shorts and basketball shorts would complete the fire look.

There’s something about monochromatic shoes—especially red ones—that reek of awesomeness. With the Jordan Retro 9 “Chile Red,” you’ll be the hottest thing on the street.
