If you were hanging around in the mid-’80s and early ’90s, you probably had a sports hat with a retro stitched-on script and solid colors— or watched your basketball idols like Michael Jordan and hip-hop giants rock them. The throwback Sports Specialties caps now fetch eye-popping prices ($600, anyone?). So why not pick up a pair of sneakers instead that pay tribute to these iconic lids with the Nike Dunk High in the “Sports Specialties” colorway that’s launching on September 10?
The special-edition Nike Dunk High “Sports Specialties” shoes come in white, College Navy and Noble Green, with plenty of texture befitting the vaunted hat brand. The kicks will be released in men’s sizes.
This Nike Dunk High is a confluence of two powerhouse brands. Why? Nike acquired Sports Specialties in 1992. While Sports Specialties hung up its proverbial hat in 1995 by stopping production of the logo-free team hats, the Swoosh soldiers on.
For this sneaker palette, crisp, off-white leather overlays edge the “Sports Specialties” sneaks with their balance of navy corduroy material. This vintage touch gives the men’s shoe a cap-like appearance with its richly saturated ribbing while retaining the colorblocking flavor we expect from a Dunk release.
A Noble Green corduroy Swoosh provides a nice contrast to the navy. Founded in 1928, Sports Specialties was the first apparel company to get a professional sports merch license to begin putting team names on products. The Dunk High includes a tongue tag with Nike and Sports Specialties logos and a lateral-side heel patch that reads “Official Nike Basketball Merchandise.” In keeping with the hat theme, the insole features Sports Specialities branding and reads “One Size Fits Most.”
Through time and wear, the upper leather ages to soft perfection, adding to the overall retro aesthetic of this sneaker. The signature foam midsole gives responsive cushioning that endures through everyday activities.
Pay tribute to the legacy of sports merchandise with the men’s Nike Dunk High “Sports Specialties” colorway. Shop these shoes at Hibbett | City Gear beginning September 10.
