Even if you’ve never set foot on the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan or Michigan State University’s East Lansing location, you’re probably aware of the longstanding Wolverines vs. Spartans rivalry. Well, no matter if you’re Team Green or Team Wolverine, Nike is seeing to it that there’s a Nike Dunk colorway just for you.
This spring, U Mich and Michigan State fans — along with serious sneakerheads — can get their hands on a pair of the Nike Dunk Low Retro in their team colors! The “Michigan” edition will drop in a Varsity Maize, Midnight Navy and white colorway and will be available in both men’s and grade school kids’ sizes. A “Team Green” shoe in white, Team Green and Total Orange also will roll out in men’s sizes. Both shoes spring into action beginning June 3.
Created in 1985 by Peter Moore (aka the architect of other notable shoes, including that year’s Air Jordan 1), the Nike Dunk enjoyed success among collegiate sports fans before getting co-opted by the skater subculture of the 1990s. So loved for their flat, board-gripping traction and low-to-the-ground midsole, Dunks were a good fit for skateboarders. (Eventually, Nike would recognize this group with the Nike Dunk SB shoes made specifically for longboarders.)
However, the original Dunks sort of got lost in the mix for a while until rapper-songwriter-producer Travis Scott began wearing them a few years back. Ask and you shall receive. As the trend picked up, Nike began to answer the call by re-releasing classic colorways and dropping Nike Dunk packs that hearkened back to the shoes’ original roots.
In keeping with the OG Dunks mission — which was largely college basketball fans-focused — the “Michigan” sneaker are being resurrected this spring. This low iteration follows the classic two-toned Dunk colorblocking, with navy leather outlining the yellow upper. Breathable holes freckle the toe box, a yellow padded tongue includes a nylon OG Nike tongue tag and “Nike” is embroidered on the heel badge in Varsity Maize. A white midsole gives way to the navy outsole, which matches the shoelaces.
The Spartan green version includes a smooth white leather foundation topped with deep green overlays and resembles the 2020 Dunk High release in the same colors. A hint of basketball-inspired Total Orange plays out on the shoe’s insole.
Both shoes retain the solid cupsole construction, heritage design and comfortable padding that Peter Moore designed more than three decades ago. Show off your Michigan pride — Wolverine- or Spartan-style — beginning June 3. Look for the Nike Dunk Low Retro “Michigan” shoe in grade school kids’ and men’s sizes, and the men’s “Team Green” Nike Dunk Low Retro at Hibbett | City Gear.
