The mid-‘80s were a history-making era that included Michael Jordan’s rise to stardom and the arrival of his signature basketball sneakers… the basketball sneakers that would change sneaker culture forever.
Air Jordans quickly became some of the most recognizable sneakers in the world and their popularity endures. The newest release from the Jordan Brand’sAir Jordan collection pays tribute to one of the lines OG colorways — 1985’s Air Jordan 1 High OG white and Court Purple. While a deadstock pair of these kicks will set you back thousands of dollars, this Retro takes inspiration from that original shoe and modernizes it a bit.
Tumbled white leather sets the scene for this basketball shoe, which first got teased a year ago. Court Purple coloring comes into play along the shoe’s collar, Swoosh, branding and outsole, offering a light-catching purple sheen. In a departure from the original shoe, this iteration includes a satiny purple sockliner.
The sneaker’s smooth toe box includes its signature series of perforations designed to enhance all-day wear and breathability. The remainder of the upper features a leather dressing that holds the foot firmly in place, made snug by a white lacing system. Court Purple encircling the ankle collar and the Swoosh are a direct nod to the original Metallic sneaker from 1985.
While many shoes have come after the Air Jordan 1, this particular sneaker has withstood the test of time thanks to its streamlined design and trusted technology. Case in point: the white foam midsole, which features an encapsulated Air-Sole unit in the heel.
Peter Moore designed these shoes expressly for Michael Jordan, and, like the now-retired Bulls player, the sneakers have aged like fine wine. The Court Purple outsole mixes flex grooves with a circular pivot pattern for sure-footed traction, and vintage touches — like the iconic Wings logo — give the AJ 1 High OG its street cred.
Beginning June 3, cop the preschool or toddler girls’ and women’s“Court Purple” sneakers at Hibbett | City Gear to see why these spectacular sneaks still reign supreme.
