LeBron James is one of the greatest players of all time. Given his on-court talents, it’s no big surprise that he’s also the name behind some of the best streetwear currently in the game.
The Nike LeBron basketball shoe line got its start back in 2003 when LeBron was a rookie with the Nike Air Zoom Generation LeBron 1. Now, nearly 20 years later, we’re writing sneaker releases about the 18th iteration of LeBron’s signature Nike shoe. On May 1, the newest release in the Lebron 18 lineup lands in black, University Gold, Coast Concord combo dubbed the “Minneapolis Lakers” colorway. This launch shoe will be available in both grade school kids’ and men’s sizes.
The performance-minded LeBron 18 keeps players game-ready, which was one of the goals designer Jason Petrie set out to meet during the sneaker’s creation. His other goal was to combine power and speed, a feat he accomplished by uniting Zoom Air and Max Air units. The Max Air unit cradles the foot with every step and provides gentle cushioning upon landing after sinking a jump shot. Inside the Max Air unit that’s located under the heel is a full-length Zoom Air Unit, which bolsters the shoes’ superior energy return.
The last time Nike tried something like this was in the Air Force 25, but the units were simply stacked atop one another. In the LeBron 18, the two individual cushioning systems fit together like a 3D puzzle piece to create a consistent surface at the footbed. This also keeps the ride height the same as that achieved with the LeBron 17.
King James is surprisingly fast for a 6’9″ player, so he needs lightweight shoes that can ride with him on breakaways. The LeBron 18 delivers with a KnitPosite 2.0 construction that reduces weight while still offering a secure, stretchy fit. This system is fitted with advanced laces that keep feet locked down as players pivot away from defenders.
