Giannis Antetokounmpo has a straightforward agenda when it comes to his game and his signature shoes: keep things simple, fast, real and inspired. The Nike Zoom Freak 2 basketball sneaker follows these rules with a sleek new black and white colorway that drops August 7 in men’s, preschool and grade school kids’ sizes.
Giannis collaborated with Ross Klein, Nike basketball senior creative director, and his design team to create a sneaker that looks animated — as if they’re actually in motion even before they’ve taken a step.
Coming off the success of last year’s signature Zoom Freak 1 launch, the NBA superstar made simplicity a priority in the second iteration of his line. Like the first Zoom Freak, the new silhouette possesses a similar low-top design with a focus on speed and control. Coupled with a molded TPU piece on the forefoot’s outer edge, the build helps contain and stabilize players’ feet while executing a Euro step — a quick two-step or long lateral move.
The Zoom Freak 2 is full of subtle but eye-catching statements. A bold, oversized black-and-white animal print Swoosh logo sweeps the lateral side, contrasting with the simple small white Swoosh on the medial side. Freak logos hit in white on the tongue and heel. The Greek Freak’s traditional triangle logo appears in a Solar Flare color on the lateral backside. The shoe is also a tribute to Giannis’ family. The Solar Flare insoles feature the words “I Am My Father’s Legacy” in black. His four brothers’ names — Kostas, Francis, Alex and Thanasis — as well as his parent’s names, Charles and Veronica, appear in molded script on the heel and rigid arch, respectively.
Synthetic leather overlays pair with a comfy and cooling textured Flyknit woven upper that sits atop a white, high-rise wrapping Air Zoom midsole. A shank plate reinforces the translucent, icy blue full rubber outsole, while a Zoom Air unit in the forefoot delivers high energy. Combined with the soft responsive foam midsole, the sneaker’s foundation provides a perfect step-off point and produces fast energy return.
