Jordan Brand is singing the blues this spring — the University of North Carolina Blues! What better way to celebrate sunny days and warmer weather than with a shoe dressed in those powdery UNC baby blues you’ve come to know and love?
After nearly a year of hype (the sneakersphere waited for this one with bated breath,) the “University Blue” (also called “UNC”) Air Jordan 4 Retro is finally coming to Hibbett | City Gear. When? The UNC AJ 4 Retro drops in toddler, preschool, grade school and men’s sizes on April 28. And while ALL Jordan releases are grails, these Jordans, in particular, are on another level. Why all the fuss? This is the first AJ 4 Retro to incorporate the legendary Tar Heels palette.
Always a fan-fave colorway, this particular take on Jordan’s alma mater comes swathed in University Blue from heel to toe. The suede upper wraps around the shoe and the signature mesh netting at the shoe’s quarter panel and throat come in the same color. Tonal blue laces contribute to the effortlessly cool look of this court-inspired sneaker.
Grey-black cement speckles the light, Tech Grey midsole with black accenting the eyelets and outlining the toe from forefoot to forefoot. The visible Air-Sole unit, meanwhile, is trimmed in crisp white.
A basketball-jersey-style tag affixed to the tongue bears Michael Jordan’s No. 23, a ghost-like Jumpman insignia with the word “Flight” scrawled just beneath it in black. A black TPU Jumpman on the heel appears to be reaching for the spoiler-like tab at the shoe’s ankle. Plush Tar Heels blue material lines the inside of the sneaker for extra padding.
In addition to the classic herringbone traction pattern, the outsole incorporates all the shoe’s colors.
The Air Jordan 1 was the first shoe to showcase the UNC color scheme. The Air Jordan 4 Retro “University Blue” sneaker furthers the brand’s heritage.
