This year marks Levi’s 150th anniversary of the brand’s most iconic design — Levi’s 501 jeans. And though they may simply be a pair of pants to some, they represent so much more. A Little Levi’s History
The Levi’s legend began in 1872 when Levi Strauss, a Bavarian dry-goods merchant, partnered with a tailor named Jacob Davis, who purchased thread and fabric from Strauss to create a workers’ uniform known as “waist overalls.” However, one day, a woman approached Davis to inform him the stitching on her husband’s pants weren’t holding up to wear and tear. Honing his resourcefulness, Davis removed the metal rivets from a saddle and used them to reinforce the pants, paving the way for the iconic blue jeans we wear today.
A year later on May 20, 1873, Davis along with Levi Strauss & Co received a patent for an “improvement in fastening pocket openings.” The rest, as they say, is history, and Levi’s went on to become one of the world’s most popular jeans companies, standing the test of time and holding up to whatever demands were asked of them.
