While Jordan Brand has crafting basketball-inspired lifestyle shoes down to an art form, it has lagged a bit behind in the eco-friendly department. Only a handful of their shoes, like the AJ 1 Mid, have been made with recycled materials. That changes with a new Nike Air Jordan Retro 12 SE colorway.
The upcoming “Utility” colorway moves Jordan in a more sustainable direction by using recycled Nike Grind materials in its construction while keeping the fresh MJ style you’ve loved since its OG release. You’ll be able to grab it in men’s, grade school, preschool and toddler sizes starting August 21.
An all-black upper looks sleek and sexy in traditional tumbled leather. One of the trademarks of the AJ Retro 12 is the rising sun embroidery. You’ll find that here with cascading lines that shoot upward from the middle. The shoe’s front features a suede overlay along the outer edge, just above the classic faux-lizard print mudguard. Both are in black to keep things monochromatic.
The outsole brings in a little color with the 3% Nike Grind construction. It stands out in a speckled blue that stretches to the back of the heel where you’ll see a white “23.” This isn’t the only touch of color — there’s bright red detailing at the midfoot, insole and tongue. The tongue has its standard “Two 3” lettering beneath the laces, as well as an outlined Jumpman logo soaring across the top.
One other detail to note about the tongue: while previous AJ Retro 12 models were made of leather, this one has a mesh tongue. This gives the shoe a performance vibe since it looks more breathable. Silver metallic eyelets at the ankle complete the look, adding just a dash of sophistication.
Since the AJ 12 was the shoe His Airness wore during the 96-97 season, it holds a lot of nostalgia for Jordan fans. You might pair it with your favorite MJ jersey or some other ’90s throwback threads. Grab the Nike AJ Retro 12 SE in men’s, grade school, preschool and toddler sizes on August 21 online or at your local Hibbett | City Gear.
