Even though it’s known as the only original Air Jordan that MJ never wore in the NBA (the drop came during his early retirement), the AJ 9 is still seeing new releases today. The new Jordan Retro 9 “Particle Grey” feels very inspired by the “Baron” colorway. Originally seen on several AJ releases, it’s a mix of grays, blacks and reds inspired by the Birmingham Barons—the team MJ played on when he switched to baseball. The new shoe uses the same tones, albeit arranged in different ways. It’s dropping on June 21 in men’s and grade school kids’ sizes.

Right away, you’ll see a hefty dose of Particle Grey along the mudguard, midsole, ankle and heel. It wraps around the whole shoe for a cohesive layer. Above this layer is the all-black nubuck upper with detailed stitching along the middle. Black laces lock into black eyelets on top of the black tongue for a sophisticated monochromatic look. The University Red tongue branding is the only pop of color in this part of the shoe, with “Air Jordan” stitching.

On the gray heel, you’ll see a University Red Jumpman emblem, which connects to the black heel tab. Below that is the number 23 stitched in black. There’s another black Jumpman on the lateral edge of the white outsole, near the heel.

The rest of the white rubber outsole is clean with unique graphics and phrases designed by Tinker Hatfield himself. The left shoe bears symbols for hope, athleticism, freedom, independence and sport, while the right side has symbols for grace, freedom, intensity, force and dedication.

Originally intended as a basketball shoe, the AJ 9 is better used for casual wear today. Throw it on with a vintage Jordan Barons jersey if you have one. Otherwise, it’ll look great with just about any joggers, jeans or basketball shorts. Keep things in the black and gray spectrum to match, or go big and bold with red instead.

Snag the Jordan Retro 9 “Particle Grey” on launch day, June 21, in men’s and grade school kids’ sizes, online or at your local Hibbett | City Gear.
