Everyone remembers Ken Griffey Jr. and the mark he made on baseball history. Now the entire family can celebrate the baseball icon with a 25th-anniversary release of his namesake shoe.

Dropping on May 29 in infant, preschool, grade school boys’ and men’s sizes, the Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Varsity Royal” features Seattle Mariners hues to commemorate Griffey Jr.’s career. It’s been five years since the last update to this colorway (which was to celebrate Griffey Jr.’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame), so it’s due for a re-release.

The shoe’s leather base glows in a pristine white that contrasts sharply with the Varsity Royal overlay. Along the toe box, you’ll notice a black leather Swoosh to showcase the Nike brand. And to keep your kid’s feet secure while they’re sliding into home, a lockdown ankle strap with an embossed “Nike” and number “24” rubber overlay ensures a tight fit.

On the shoe’s bottom is a white sole unit that screams ’90s fashion. The sole is offset with touches of black as well as a neon Volt Max Air unit for visual appeal. Underneath, the black rubber outsole gives little ones or adults traction whether they’re rounding third or walking on the sidewalk.

Designer Tracy Teague had an interesting challenge when creating footwear for Griffey Jr. He requested a shoe that was loud and different from everyone else. Teague delivered with a style that easily goes from batting practice to running errands.

You’ll feel comfortable and locked down no matter what you’re doing, thanks to the internal bootie. Even if you’re going hard on the field, the Max Air Unit along the forefoot and heel will keep you comfortable, cushioned and ready for whatever comes next.
